Peterbilt 579 · Highway tractor

Your 579. Explained.

A Trucking Life with Shawn reference guide, paired with manufacturer documents. Start with the truck in front of you and the information that matches its equipment.

Match the reference to your truck

This collection targets 2020–2026 trucks, but the linked 579 reference is the May 2024 edition. Match its cab, display, engine and transmission instructions to your truck. Ask Peterbilt for the VIN-matched edition when the equipment or year differs.

Driver guide

Get familiar before you roll

Use this walkthrough during a parked vehicle handover. Read the applicable operating instructions and complete practical training before using an unfamiliar control or system.

Start with your 579

  • Start with the display and steering-column controls fitted to your truck. Find the warning-message view and record where the transmission selector and engine-brake controls are located.
  • Build a parked walkthrough around the Controls chapter. Have the driver identify each fitted function before explaining how it is used; a pictured option is not proof that the truck has it.
  • For sleeper trucks, include the separate sleeper controls in the handover. Record the installed idle-management or auxiliary-power equipment and keep its own instructions with the truck.

Make a truck-specific handover

Create a one-page note for this unit: vehicle identification, model year, engine, transmission, installed options and the manuals kept in the cab. Add the fleet’s breakdown contact and the location of inspection and defect-report forms.

Work through the fitted controls with the trainer. For each one, explain what it does, when it is used, and where to find the full instructions. Keep unanswered questions on the handover note until they are resolved.

Find the instructions before acting

For a warning, use the exact symbol or message to find the corresponding Emergency or Controls entry. For regeneration, use the instructions for the installed engine and aftertreatment system. A search result, warning code or another driver’s button sequence does not establish the correct action for this truck.

Close the training loop

Before the first assignment, have the driver locate the correct operating reference, explain how to report a defect, and identify who decides whether the truck can return to service. Record the trainer, date, unit number and any follow-up training needed.

Repair & maintenance

A better starting point for service

Separate chassis, engine and transmission complaints in the work order. A 579 model number alone does not identify the powertrain or the diagnostic procedure.

This section covers service preparation and reference selection. Component removal, torque values, wiring pinouts and fault-code repair steps require the applicable workshop information; they are not supplied by this starter guide.

Write the symptom, then the evidence

A useful work order separates what was observed from what someone suspects. Record the exact message, when it started and whether it is still present. Do not describe a part as failed simply because its name appears in a code.

Truck & equipment
Unit, VIN, model year, engine and transmission identification.
What happened
Exact symptom, warning text or recorded codes, mileage and engine hours.
When it happened
Startup, road travel, load change, parked operation or work-equipment use.
What changed
Recent service, parts replacement, wiring work or other relevant changes.
Next decision
Who was contacted and what inspection, recovery or service action was authorized.

Build the maintenance record

Create separate schedule entries for the chassis and each installed component. Record the manual title and revision used to select each interval, alongside the last completed date, mileage or hours.

For every service line, keep the required material specification, completed work and supporting receipt together. Identify the responsible shop and resolve missing records before treating an item as completed.

Use the manufacturer’s schedule for the actual component and operating duty. The edition linked here is a starting reference; its presence does not establish a universal service interval for every 579.
