How to Find Free Truck Parking Near You

Start with where you are or where you’re headed. The search box on this page matches names, cities, states, ZIP codes and interstates, and the state grid drills down by interstate and direction of travel — parking comes back in route order by exit or verified mile marker, so the next options ahead of you are listed first. Sorting by “Nearest to me” uses your current location instead.

Pick a primary stop and a backup before your available driving time gets low. If the first lot is full when you roll in, you want the next option already chosen — not a search at the last minute with the clock running.

Types of Free Semi-Truck Parking

  • Truck stops — most keep free rows alongside any paid or reserved spaces, with fuel, food and showers on site.
  • State rest areas — designated truck spaces, usually free, with time limits that vary by state.
  • Welcome centers — rest areas at state lines, often with staffed information desks and truck parking.
  • Independent travel plazas — smaller non-chain stops that often have room when the big lots are full.
  • Retail locations that individually allow trucks — some stores permit truck parking; it is always a per-property decision.
  • Industrial or staging areas — only where parking is confirmed to be legal and permitted at that specific site.

Permission, posted restrictions and local rules change. Signs at the property and instructions from the owner always override anything listed in a directory — this one included.

Free Truck Stops vs. Rest Areas

Truck stops earn their keep on amenities: fuel, food, showers, laundry, and bigger lots. The trade-off is demand — free rows at busy interchanges fill first, and a growing share of spaces at major chains are paid or reserved. If you need services and a full reset, a truck stop is usually the play.

Rest areas are simpler: free designated truck spaces, restrooms, and not much else. Time limits vary by state — some allow a full break, others post shorter limits, and a few prohibit overnight parking outright. Verify the rules for that state and that location before you count on it for a 10-hour break.

Listings on this site show truck-space counts, amenities and overnight status where we have them on file. Where we don’t, the value says unknown — it is never guessed.

Can Semi Trucks Park Overnight at Walmart?

Sometimes — and it is decided store by store. Whether a truck can park overnight at any retail lot depends on the individual store’s policy, the property owner and local ordinances, and those change. Check for posted signs when you pull in, and when in doubt, ask store management for permission before you shut down. No directory can make a nationwide promise here, so we don’t.

When Should Truck Drivers Start Looking for Parking?

Earlier than feels necessary. There is no single hour that works everywhere: busy corridors and major metro areas can fill well before sunset, while quieter stretches stay open later into the evening. Plan against your own route, your remaining hours and the day’s conditions — weather, construction and detours all push lots full sooner.

The pattern that works: pick your target stop and a backup along the route while you still have hours to spare, and start working the plan before the clock forces the decision. Rolling past a half-full lot at 4 PM often beats hunting for any spot at 8 PM.

Planning Parking Before Your HOS Clock Runs Out

Build the parking stop into the trip, not onto the end of it. Estimate where your drive clock will run out, then pick parking short of that point — with a backup a few exits further on — so a full lot doesn’t leave you out of hours and out of options. The HOS calculator helps you project your clocks, and the trip planner lays the stops out along your route. This is general planning information, not legal advice — current FMCSA rules and your carrier’s policies govern.

What to Do When Free Parking Is Full

Go to the backup, not the shoulder. Check the next exits ahead on your direction page, nearby rest areas, and alternative truck stops a little further off the busy interchange. If the whole corridor is filling up, a reserved spot beats circling:

Free Truck Parking FAQ

Where can I find free truck parking near me?

Use the search and filters on this page to find truck parking by name, city, state, ZIP code or interstate, or sort by "Nearest to me" to use your current location. Each listing shows the details we have on file, such as parking type, truck-space counts, amenities and overnight status.

Can semi trucks park overnight at rest areas?

Many state rest areas and welcome centers allow trucks in designated truck spaces, but time limits and overnight rules vary by state and by location. Posted signs at the rest area are the final word — check them, and check the listing’s overnight status where we have one on file.

Is truck-stop parking always free?

No. Many truck stops offer a mix of free and paid or reservable spaces, and free rows at busy locations often fill first. Listings note free, paid or reserved options where that information is on file, so you know your odds before you take the exit.

Can truck drivers park overnight at Walmart?

It depends on the individual store, the property owner and local ordinances — there is no nationwide rule. Look for posted signs, and when in doubt ask store management for permission before you shut down.

How do I find truck parking along an interstate?

Pick your state on this page, then your interstate and direction of travel. Parking is listed in route order — by exit number, or by mile marker where one is verified — so the next options ahead of you come first.

Can I search for parking by exit number?

Yes. The direction pages list parking in route order by exit or mile marker, and the directory’s interstate exit pages group everything listed at a given exit. The search box also matches names, cities, states, ZIP codes and interstates.

What should I check before parking overnight?

Posted signs and time limits, whether overnight parking is allowed at that property, lighting and surroundings, and whether the entrance and exit work for your trailer. Where we have them, listings include overnight status, amenities and driver reviews — and unknown values are labeled unknown, never guessed.

What can I do when free parking is full?

Work your backup plan: check the next exits ahead on your route, nearby rest areas and alternative truck stops. If the corridor is filling up, reserving a paid spot ahead through Truck Parking Club (promo code SHAWN20) books the space before you arrive.

How we maintain parking information

Listing details may come from official transportation sources, parking operators, location websites and corrections submitted by drivers. A human reviews every driver report before the directory changes, and fields we can’t back with real data are labeled unknown rather than filled in with guesses.
