Diesel at $6.39 Is Killing Carriers: What Drivers Need to Know Right Now

Diesel is up more than 70% in a year, and trucking companies are filing Chapter 11 one after another. Here's what's real, what's rumor, and how to protect your paycheck.

I've been in this industry 17 years, and I've never seen fuel do what it's doing right now.

National diesel is sitting around $6.39 a gallon according to AAA. That's a hair under last week's record of $6.53. A year ago we were paying $3.71. That's a jump of more than 70%, and the war with Iran is behind it.

That kind of number doesn't just hurt at the pump. It's putting companies out of business.

The carriers going under

FreightWaves' latest distress report shows at least eight sizable trucking companies filed Chapter 11 last month. Two of them:

  • Xoco Transport, with 40+ tractors.
  • Globemaster, with 51 trucks and up to $10 million in liabilities.

Other counts put it at 16 trucking and delivery bankruptcies between late August and September 21.

Drivers are losing jobs too. 4XH Logistics in Texas cut 230 jobs. Capstone Delivery in California cut 106.

These aren't fly-by-night outfits. These are real fleets with real drivers who woke up one day without a truck to drive.

Why it's happening

It's simple math. Fuel costs went up fast, and spot rates didn't keep up. When diesel eats your margin and the load pays the same as it did six months ago, the money runs out. Small and mid-size carriers feel it first because they don't have the cash cushion to ride it out.

The October 1 "shutdown" isn't real

You've probably seen the posts about a nationwide truck shutdown on October 1. It's social media chatter. OOIDA has no organized strike, and neither do the Teamsters. Snopes looked into it and found no evidence of one.

Don't park your truck and lose a paycheck over a Facebook post. The real threat isn't a strike. It's fuel quietly bleeding carriers dry.

If you haul fuel, read this

FMCSA's hours-of-service waiver for gasoline and diesel haulers is still active through December 16. Here's what it means:

  • You can drive up to 16 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • You need a 6-hour sleeper berth break, or 8 consecutive hours off duty if your truck has no sleeper.
  • You must carry a copy of the waiver in the truck.
  • It covers gasoline and diesel only. Propane haulers stay on standard HOS.

Extra hours don't mean you have to run tired. If you're fatigued, shut it down. Your CDL is worth more than one load.

What to do right now

1. Know your company's health. If pay is late, fuel cards get declined, or trucks start sitting, start lining up options now.

2. Track fuel daily. Know where the cheap diesel is before you need it.

3. Cut idle time. At $6+ a gallon, every hour of idle is money out of somebody's pocket, and when the company hurts, drivers hurt next.

4. Ignore the rumor mill. Get your news from real sources, not viral posts.
