Diesel Is Still $6.18 a Gallon — Why the "Relief" Isn't Reaching the Pump
Diesel's national average is still $6.18 a gallon, up more than $2.50 from last year. New supply deals and a dyed-diesel waiver made headlines, but analysts say the relief is too small to matter. Here's what truckers should do now.
Last updated October 15, 2026
Quick answer: The EIA national diesel average is $6.179 a gallon (week of October 12, 2026), down just 2 cents. It's still $2.51 higher than a year ago. New supply deals and a dyed-diesel waiver made headlines, but analysts say they're too small to bring real relief at the pump.

Diesel dropped two cents this week. Two.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly average for on-highway diesel is $6.179 a gallon as of October 12, 2026. That's down from the all-time record of $6.529 set on September 21, but it's still $2.51 a gallon higher than this same week last year. In California, diesel is still averaging over $8.
If you're running a 150-gallon fill, that's about $375 more per fill-up than a year ago. Fill up twice a week, and you're looking at roughly $750 a week.

The "relief" headlines vs. the pump
Two moves made headlines in October.
1. A new overseas diesel supply deal. The first shipments total roughly 2.25 million barrels, according to Transport Topics. The U.S. burns about 3.7 million barrels of diesel a day. That means the first shipments add up to less than one day of U.S. diesel demand.
2. A temporary dyed-diesel waiver. It eases some diesel tax rules and expands highway use of red-dyed diesel through December 31. Trucking analysts say it has real limits, and fleets are still paying high prices.
Fuel analysts across the board are skeptical. GasBuddy's Patrick De Haan said he doubts the new supply will bring significant relief to trucking.
Watch the futures, not the headlines
When the supply deal was announced, diesel futures dropped almost 5%. By October 13, they had climbed back up around 5%, trading near $4.94 a gallon. That's higher than before the announcement.
Futures are where traders bet on what diesel will cost next. When futures rise, pump prices usually follow. The market looked at the relief and said: not enough.
The EIA's own forecast has diesel averaging about $4.49 in 2027. Relief is a next-year story, not a this-month story.
A warning about dyed diesel
Do not put red-dyed diesel in a highway truck because you saw a headline. Get it in writing from your carrier or safety department first. Check how your state is handling the waiver and how it affects your fuel tax reporting. The waiver ends December 31, and nobody wants to explain red fuel at a scale house in January.
When in doubt, run clear.
5 ways to protect your money right now
1. Check prices before you fuel. A 30–40 cent spread between stops on the same corridor is common. On a 150-gallon fill, that's $45–$60 saved. → Free daily diesel prices
2. Slow down. Dropping a few mph is the cheapest fuel savings there is.
3. Cut idle time. Use your APU or bunk heater instead of idling.
4. Owner-operators: check your fuel surcharge. Most surcharges are tied to the weekly EIA average. If yours isn't moving with it, you're eating the difference.
5. Budget like $6 diesel is here through year's end. If it drops, treat it as a bonus, not your plan.
Built by drivers, for drivers
The drivers who last in this industry are the ones who can handle pressure: fuel, freight, and stress. That's what we teach at Trucking Life Academy, a Class A CDL school in Dalton, Georgia, built on donations from working drivers and local businesses. We train on 10-speed manual transmissions, and the main thing we teach is mindset.
